Dog Breed Cost Comparison
What a dog costs over its life is mostly decided by one line, and it is a different line for every breed: the airway on a flat-faced dog, the grocery bill on a giant one, the grooming schedule on a long coat. This compares 23 of them side by side, with the single thing that moves each breed's number the most, and a calculator behind every row.
| Breed | Lifetime cost | What decides the number |
|---|---|---|
| Beagle | $25,640 | The breeder price or the shelter fee is the number people argue over. It is also the part that barely moves the lifetime total: the decade of keep is the whole answer. |
| Dalmatian | $26,750 | A Dalmatian's cost is not one number, it is a floor and a ceiling. At our defaults the unavoidable floor, the dog plus a decade of food, prevention and routine vet, is $15,150; the elective lines, insurance, training, boarding and extras, add $11,600 on top for a $26,750 full life. That $11,600, 43 percent of the total, is every dollar the breed does not set. The floor is the dog; the ceiling is your choices. |
| Dachshund | $27,846 | The keep is modest and the price tag is shoppable. What decides this dog is whether the reserve is filled on the day you need it, and that is a question about months. |
| French bulldog | $28,050 | A frenchie is cheap to run and expensive to own. The food bowl is small; the price tag and the airway are where the money actually goes. |
| Shiba | $29,340 | A deposit is not a payment, it is a decision. At our defaults $500 down commits a $29,340 ledger, which is 58.7x leverage, and it is paid at the point where you know the least you will ever know. |
| Bernese mountain | $33,700 | A $2,000 breeder price is not $2,000. At our defaults it is $250 a year on one horizon and $154 on another, and the number that decides which is not in the question. |
| Yorkie | $33,850 | Every line on a yorkie's ledger is small. The years box is what decides the total, and it beats the breeder's price handily. |
| Corgi | $34,050 | What a corgi's precautions are worth is set by your policy, not by the precaution. At our defaults an insured owner's $600 of ramps cannot pay for itself at any efficacy; uninsured, the same $600 pays if it cuts the risk by 10 points. |
| Malinois | $35,650 | Every line on a dog ledger is there because somebody billed you for it. At our defaults the hours are 3,640 across ten years, worth $54,600 at our rate, which is 1.5x the whole $35,650 billed ledger and appears on none of it. |
| Golden retriever | $35,980 | The breeder's price is the deposit on a decade. The coat and the size are what actually bill you, year after year. |
| Chow | $37,050 | The chow's coat is a standing salon bill, and it is the one line you can move in-house. At our defaults ten years at the salon is $7,200 of grooming and the same coat done at home is $1,040. The $400 kit clears its own cost in 5 grooms, about seven months, not the years the price tag implies. |
| Labrador | $37,320 | The cost-per-year figure describes no year you will actually have. At our defaults year one is $5,585 and every year after is $2,885, so the $3,110 average is 44% short for the year that is about to happen. |
| Kangal | $37,550 | Kept in a household our 10 year ledger is $37,550; kept outdoors with a job it is $28,250. The lower number is not the same ledger trimmed: it carries $5,900 of shelter, tracking and feed lines the household one never prints. The two readings share only $22,350, which is 51 percent of everything either would write down. |
| Pomeranian | $38,450 | Over half of what this dog costs is discretionary. The rest is a small monthly floor that keeps billing for fourteen years whatever happens to your budget. |
| Cane corso | $40,600 | The breeder's price is the number people shop. On a guardian breed this size, the lines charged by a landlord and an insurer can quietly run past it. |
| Doberman | $40,645 | A budget of ten guesses is not ten guesses. At our defaults a 10% lean on every line adds $3,695, which is 2.6x what the same error would cost if the lines cancelled, and more than the purchase price. |
| Great dane | $40,650 | A Great Dane's price tag is ordinary; its grocery bill is not. At our defaults the lines priced by the dog's weight, food, prevention and boarding, run $23,150 across ten years, more than the $1,500 purchase and the $15,300 of fixed keep put together. The sticker everyone googles is under a twentieth of a $40,650 life. You cannot shrink the dog, so the lever is the by-weight band, not the price. |
| Great pyrenees | $40,975 | A naive plan dumps the whole $3,500 fence on one dog. The share this dog actually consumes is $875: a fence is a cost of the property, not of the animal, and it lives on a longer clock. |
| Chihuahua | $41,489 | A chihuahua's bills are small and its horizon is long, which is the exact shape that hides money. At our defaults the cheques you actually write run about 24.6% above the flat sum. |
| German shepherd | $42,405 | Being $3,855 over on this budget costs you 4% a year. Being $3,855 under costs 24%. Same mistake, 6x the price, and it means the number to budget is the top of your range rather than the middle: $231 to be wrong instead of $540. |
| Poodle | $43,870 | Toy, miniature and standard are three animals sharing one word. At our defaults, which poodle you mean swings the life total by $10,276, against a $1,500 purchase price nobody stops arguing about. |
| Tibetan mastiff | $47,265 | A ten year total adds a year-one dollar to a year-ten dollar as though they were the same unit. Held flat at today's prices our ledger is $41,600; let the recurring lines drift at the 3 percent the box defaults to and it is $47,265. That $5,665 gap is 12 percent of the total and larger than our purchase price and gear combined, and it lands entirely on the keep. |
| Siberian husky | $70,410 | A husky's biggest line is bought by the day, so the yearly bill is a staircase rather than a slope. At our defaults one extra hour a week is worth $2,340 a year in one place and nothing at all in another. |
Each lifetime figure is that calculator's total at our default assumptions, generated from the page itself so it cannot drift. It is a planning starting point, not a sourced statistic. Open any breed to price it on your own numbers.
